Gregory Welch

Author of The Welch Doctrine · Community Organizer · Criminal Justice Reform Advocate

Gregory Welch joins the Hart 2028 campaign as a powerful voice for justice, restoration, civic engagement, and people-first leadership. His life and work reflect the kind of resilience and action this campaign is built around: listening to people, standing with communities, and turning lived experience into meaningful change.

After being sentenced to 15 years to life in federal prison at the age of 30, Gregory refused to let confinement define his future. He became deeply engaged in the prison law library, studied the law with purpose, and used that knowledge to fight for his freedom.

His legal journey ultimately reached the Supreme Court, where he won a 7-1 victory. That case did more than change his life; it helped free over one thousand people immediately and became a lasting example of what persistence, preparation, and courage can accomplish.

Today, Gregory is involved in voter engagement, criminal justice reform, legal advocacy, and community organizing. Through Hart 2028 events, he helps connect the campaign’s message to real conversations about second chances, civic power, restoration, accountability, and the responsibility to build systems that serve people with fairness and dignity.

As the author of The Welch Doctrine, Gregory shares his story of overcoming the odds, learning the law without a college degree, and understanding what it means to become a jailhouse lawyer from a Black perspective. His voice brings moral clarity, practical urgency, and lived experience to the movement Hart 2028 is building.

Justice Reform Focused on restoration, fairness, and community-centered change.
Legal Advocacy Turned lived experience into a powerful command of the law.
